Friday, February 29th, 2008Post Reading Week
Friday, February 29th, 2008So it’s a week after reading week and I’ve basically finished everything academically important/critical this week. I wrote 3 midterms (Accounting, Biochemistry, and Calculus) and did my biochemistry lab today.
To sum things up about the midterms.. I wrote 2 midterms that I was totally unprepared for, and 1 that I thought I was well prepared for, but totally underestimated (prof’s outline made it sound easier than it was).
Now I just have to get through 5 more weeks of this and it’ll be finals and I’ll be set to go!!!!
ENGG*1500 – Engineering Analysis (aka Linear Algebra)
Thursday, February 14th, 2008I swear ENGG*1500 has got to be the worst course I’ve taken to date at the U of G. I swear, it’s like a high school class, except we have to pay for this class and it’s more self-taught than anything else… I mean, how many university classes in the world have a prof point at students and say “one of you two have to come sit here, you’re talking too much”… honestly, I haven’t seen that happen since high school, not to mention I’ve seen high school teachers who have more control than this prof does.
Linear Algebra isn’t exactly easy stuff and it really needs a good prof who has a through understanding of the material and truly loves it to teach, and I have to say, out prof is a prime example of how you don’t want teaching it. I mean, she’s boring, refuses to post proper notes online and is sometimes monotone. Honestly, a great way to improve this course would be to tell us what section the next lecture will be on, I hate going into a lecture not knowing what material is up next. It would also help if the prof would giving us partially completed notes, rather than ‘chapter summaries,’ I’m not asking for full notes, but rather notes that have all the major theorems and side notes to be taught that lecture, and the examples, unsolved with space to solve it in class. I’m sure that way we can learn a lot better. Being able to quickly go over what was to be taught in the up coming lecture would make understanding it in lecture a lot easier, not to mention we would probably be able to get through more examples if we didn’t have to spend half the lecture copying slide after slide of notes… and more examples usually means better understanding.
Sometimes I really wish my high school discreet mathematics teacher from high school Mr. Korunovski was the one teaching this course, he was enthusiastic algebra teacher. He made high school algebra interesting and fun… sigh I wish he could come here and teach this course.
Reading Week!!!!
Thursday, February 14th, 2008Okay, I know reading week doesn’t officially start until I finish classes tomorrow, but realistically, I’m done all my assignments, labs, experiments, and quizzes for the week and well, I just have to attend class tomorrow and then I get a week away from school!!! Seriously, I know I’m not carrying the full engineering workload right, but I’m still a bit overwhelmed, because I’m taking courses that aren’t exactly my expertise. I mean, accounting and economics seem fairly easy, everything makes sense, but it takes so long to get things right sometimes, I mean, interpreting the questions can be a pain sometimes, especially those ‘apply what you learned’ type questions… Then there’s engineering analysis, which is basically linear algebra, and frankly, I suck at math… SIGH Oh well, at least I get a week to catch up on reading and whatnot, hope that helps ease the load.
