So I went to the Apple Store at Eaton’s Centre to pick up my MacBook, yet again. Anyways, this time they swapped out my airport (wireless) card. So as of now, I have a new logic board, airport card, new top case, and new display bezel… basically a new MacBook… Why don’t they just give me a new MacBook?!?!? ARGH…

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007Not That Type of Friend…
Friday, December 21st, 2007In one way or another, everyone has friends and we probably classify them in many different ways. Of course there are the generic classifications like best friend, close friend, good friend, friend, and perhaps even acquaintance. However, there exist another set of classifications that we use that are separate from what has been listed. When we think of our friends, we also think of them as day-to-day friends – friends who we can hangout with in our daily lives, go to friends – friends who we can go to in times of trouble, long-term friend – friends that will be in our lives for the long run, all-round friends – friends that we can go to for just about anything and the first ones you think of for everything in your life.
Personally speaking, I have very few friends, and for that reason they’re all very close to me and I go to them for just about anything. In a sense it’s because I treat them all as close friends and put them first that it hits me every time that I realize that I don’t hold the same position in their lives. I really wish that I could be that type of friend to people, where they would think of me whenever something comes up, but I guess I’m just not that type of friend.
AppleCare
Monday, December 17th, 2007Sometimes it these manufacture repairs just don’t make sense to me… I mean, last Friday I brought my MacBook into the Apple Store at Eaton’s Centre for a diagnosis and a repairs based on the diagnosis. I got to the Apple Store, waited for my turn to see the ‘Apple Genius’ then gave him a sheet of paper that I had prepared that included all the ‘problems’ I’ve been experiencing over the past few months, including: kernel panics, weird screen effects, unresponsive touch pad, screen sleep issues, discoloured top case, overheating, and a few other problems. After the ‘Genius’ took a look at my list and my MacBook because I provided a screenshot of the weird screen effect, he said that I would need my logicboard (motherboard) with heatsink, display bezel, and top case replaced. Since I have AppleCare (extended warranty) I didn’t care, I checked in my MacBook for repair and he told me it would take two days max (it usually just takes one day, but they say two days to be safe). I went in and got my MacBook today and looked at the receipt, and it was $1221 BEFORE tax… I really don’t get why they don’t just give me a replacement MacBook… I bought my MacBook back in August of 2006 for $1250… $1250 – $1221 = $29… They would’ve only lost $29 if they gave me a new one…. And I forgot to mention that $1221 is excluding labour so realistically they didn’t even save the $29…
I guess I shouldn’t be complaining because they practically did give me a new computer since the CPU is soldered onto the logicboard and they gave me a new one of those, but it still would’ve been nice to have gotten a new MacBook and not have to go through the hassle of coming and going to pick it up… Thus far they’ve replaced a heatsink, a battery, a logicboard with heatsink, a display bezel, and two top cases… All those repairs… it was definitely worth the 150 I spent on the extended warranty…
Academic Career Choices…
Friday, December 14th, 2007I’ve come to realize that I might have made the worst decision of my life based on a few variables I had to consider; the decision I’m talking about is my choice of education and hence future career.
I’ve always been fascinated and been interested by forensics and the idea of using science to solve crimes; mainly cause I believe that’s there’s always some sort of mathematical/scientific reason for things that happen in life. Throughout high school my goal was simply to graduate and then go study at a university with a forensics program.
I suppose one can say that most of my dream came true, I graduated from high school and got accepted at to Trent University’s Forensic Program (one of the more popular schools for forensics here in Ontario). However, in the end I decided not to follow my passion for forensics and instead I went into Biological Engineering at the University of Guelph’s Biological Engineering program. My choice to go into engineering instead of forensic science was not because I started to get interested in engineering, but rather because of the ‘payout’. Forensics isn’t a big thing in Canada, it’s more common in the US, and frankly I don’t want to have to move to the US for my job, I’d much rather stay here in Canada. Secondly, biological engineering is just starting to blossom, so I thought I would pick something that I have some interest in and start from there….
At first I thought it was pretty good, it was a lot of hard work, but it was good, but soon after I realized that the chemistry involved would literally kill me… so after 3 semesters (1.5 years) I have now changed streams… I’m no longer in biological engineering, but rather in Engineering Systems & Computing (I believe they renamed it to Systems & Computer Engineering). I’ve always been geared toward technology so hopefully this stream of engineering will be good for me.
In the end I guess it doesn’t make a difference that I chose engineering over forensic science when I had the chance, perhaps I would be enjoying University of Trent’s forensic science program more, but I would still have to face the chemistry I’d had to do at the University of Guelph, and on top of that I would have to do biology and physics.
Hope my change into Engineering Systems & Computing will be my last change, otherwise I don’t know what I’d do…
I’m Done…
Thursday, December 13th, 2007I’m DONE… the semester’s over… some of it was brutal… but it’s OVER… so that’s alright =D nothing beats this =D Especially since I know I definitely passed Calculus =D now I just need to rearrange myself for next semester =D
